 - John Johnson, MD, Director, Medical Genetics, Shodair Hospital
John P. Johnson, MD, is the director of the Montana Medical Genetics Program at Shodair Hospital in Helena. In addition to his work at Shodair, Dr. Johnson serves on the Montana State Family and Community Health Services Advisory Councils, the Governor's Advisory Committee on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Effects in Montana, and as a consultant for the Montana Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Task Force.

Session Description:
Fetal alcohol syndrome may affect three dozen babies in Montana each year at a lifetime cost estimated at $1.4 million each. "Alcohol continues to be a bigger threat to larger numbers of children than any illicit drug known to man, including cocaine," said Ann Streissguth, of the University of Washington's fetal alcohol unit. Treating and caring for the victims of fetal alcohol syndrome is estimated to cost more than $2.5 billion each year nationally.
