Parents, Let's Unite for Kids presents:
A one day seminar designed for special educators, administrators, parents,
counselors, rehabilitation professionals, speech/language pathologists,
occupational therapists, physical therapists, social workers, psychologists, and anyone interested in
behavior strategies for working with children and teens.
Presenter: Doug Cochran Roberts, MA, LPC, karidoug@onewest.net
Doug is noted for his workshops throughout the state of Montana. He blends
cutting edge research with his everyday experience of working with children and
youth with very challenging behaviors. His practical examples and demonstrations
illustrate a realistic and compassion approach for reaching difficult, troubled
kids. He inspires and informs; and audiences give great reviews. He is a father
of four grown children — one of who has multiple disabilities - and two
grandchildren. He has worked in schools and all grade levels for twenty —four
years. He was a therapeutic foster parent for nine years. He is presently a
school counselor/psychologist in the Corvallis Schools and has a small private
practice in Missoula as a licensed professional counselor.
Session Description: This workshop will build on the concepts developed in Staying Cool - Part 1. However, attendance at Staying Cool - Part 1 is not a pre-requisite for this workshop. It will focus on children with very difficult behaviors who cause very difficult moments for adults. Many of these children do not appear to learn through rewards and consequences and traditional behavior modification programs. The workshop will focus on both the adult and the child during these difficult moments. The 'high road' response to difficult behaviors will come from learning to see behavior as a form of communication and to use a powerful tool called Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA). This assessment will examine the major influences to these difficult moments and what positive behavior interventions will increase better behavior. Participants will be helped to develop their own FBA and specific positive behavior interventions to use immediately after the workshop - in a school or home setting.
